This time the police arrived almost at the speed of light, their response time being less than twenty minutes. They were improving. Besides the same sergeant and constable from Monday, the police inspector and a corporal were also in attendance. There was no need for them to use police tape to mark off the area, either, as what they’d used previously was still in place.

But this time I had a more difficult job convincing them I didn’t commit the murder. I couldn’t blame them for being suspicious, though, what with me finding two bodies in the same pool within a couple of days of each other.

After summoning them, I’d also called Doc. As it turned out, his presence wasn’t only necessary to declare Big Fly dead—he was also required to attend to the police themselves, who didn’t just turn green when we pulled out the body. The constable and corporal began puking their guts out into a surrounding hedge of hibiscus. Big Fly’s throat had been cut from ear to ear. It looked to have been done with a cutlass.

After Doc had sat the two men down so they could begin recovering, I whispered, “Big Fly admitted testing positive for AIDS.”

“Right. Ned told me. Thanks for reminding me. The virus won’t have survived outside the body that long, anyway, so anyone who has touched the blood or the body is reasonably secure. I brought along some latex gloves, though. We’d all better put them on, just to be on the safe side.” He took a box out of his black medical bag and handed a pair of gloves to each of us.

About ten minutes later, the police questioned me, Angie, and the Brethren, then waited until the ambulance arrived and for the attendants to remove the body before they left the scene. As they were climbing into the car, Inspector Kydd turned and said, “Do not to try to leave de country, Geoff, and I want you to come to de station this afternoon.”

To make yet another full and useless report, I thought.
